Which AI voice agent to choose in 2026: 6 questions to ask before signing
AI voice agent offers all look alike on the homepage: a natural voice, an impressive demo, a per-minute price that looks low. The differences show up after signing, when the first invoices arrive and the first calls go out. Here are the six questions to ask beforehand, and what each answer tells you.
1. What does the per-minute price really include?
This is the question that changes the bill the most. Many platforms list a platform price of a few cents a minute, then charge separately for voice, transcription, language model and telephony. Each block has its own meter, sometimes in dollars, sometimes on several invoices.
Ask for the price of a complete call to a French mobile: voice, model, telephony, everything included. If nobody can give it to you simply, you will only know your real cost on the first statement.
Also ask how short calls are counted, per second or per started minute, and what a call that reaches voicemail costs. On an outbound campaign, those calls make up the volume.
2. How many calls can go out at the same time?
A voice agent only makes sense for prospecting if it calls in parallel. Yet the number of concurrent calls is often capped: one to five in entry plans, and each extra concurrent call is then billed monthly.
Do the maths on your own list: how many contacts per day, over which hours, with what answer rate. You will know how many concurrent calls you need, and what the offer really costs.
3. Does the agent say your script, or improvise?
An agent that converses freely is impressive in a demo. In production, it may rephrase your offer, repeat a question, drift from what your legal team approved. For a qualification or booking call, that is rarely what you want.
Ask whether there is a mode where every sentence is said exactly as you wrote it, in your order, with AI only used to understand the answer and choose what comes next. And ask what happens when the person interrupts, asks something off-topic or says they are not the right person.
4. What happens on voicemail, and when the contact is ready?
On a cold list, a large share of calls reaches voicemail. The agent must recognise it fast, hang up or leave a short message, and reschedule the contact. Otherwise you pay for minutes of conversation with a recording.
Conversely, when the contact is interested, the agent must warm-transfer them to your sales rep with context, or book the meeting straight into their calendar. A qualified lead waiting for a callback tomorrow is a lead going cold.
5. Who sets it up, and who adjusts it afterwards?
A developer platform gives you building blocks: you write the agent, connect telephony, handle follow-ups, link your CRM. That is the right choice if you have a technical team and want to tune everything yourself.
If your goal is meetings next week, ask who sets the pitch with you, who listens to the first calls, who fixes what does not work. And whether the automations around the calls, such as texts, follow-ups or reports, are built for you or left to you.
6. What we do at Nodical
We built Nodical around these six questions. The price list is public and the same for everyone: from €0.12 a minute depending on your volume, calls to France included, billed per second, unanswered calls cost nothing. 10 to 200 concurrent calls are included depending on the tier.
With the Essential offer, the agent says your script word for word. It detects voicemail, warm-transfers ready contacts and returns every call transcribed in your workspace. Our team sets up the campaign with you and builds the automations around it. The detailed comparison, with other providers' public prices, is on our Comparison page.
Questions we get asked
Must an AI voice agent say it is an AI?
Yes. Since 2 August 2026, the EU AI Act requires people to know they are interacting with an AI system. The agent introduces itself in your company's name and never pretends to be human.
What budget should I plan to start?
It depends on your minute volume. Always ask for an all-in price for a call to a French mobile, telephony included, then multiply by your real volume. At Nodical, the price list is public on the Pricing page.
Do I need a technical team?
Not with an operated offer: the pitch, settings and automations are done with you. With a developer platform, yes.
The first call, the one nobody likes making, is the one Nodical makes.
