AI callbot: what it is, what it does, what it costs
Callbot, voicebot, AI voice agent: three words for the same idea, software that talks on the phone in place of a person. Behind the word, products differ widely: some answer three questions, others call thousands of contacts a day and transfer the interested ones to a salesperson. This guide explains what a callbot can do today, how it is billed and how to choose without getting it wrong.
Callbot, voicebot, voice agent: what's the difference?
First-generation callbots followed a decision tree: “press 1”, or a few recognised keywords. As soon as the caller left the expected path, they stopped understanding.
An AI callbot, also called a voicebot or AI voice agent, understands naturally spoken sentences, even hesitant ones, and answers with a synthetic voice close to a human one. It can ask questions, record the answers, detect voicemail and hand the call to a human at the right moment.
In practice, all three words now describe the same family of products. What matters is what the product actually does in your calls.
What an AI callbot does well
Volume: calling hundreds of contacts at the same time, at any hour, with the same script from the first call to the last.
Speed: calling an inbound lead back in under a minute, while they are still at their screen.
Reception: picking up in the evening, at weekends, when the line is busy, instead of letting it ring out.
Qualification: asking the questions that sort contacts (need, timing, budget, eligibility) and only passing on those who are ready.
What it won't do for you
It won't replace a salesperson in a complex negotiation: it prepares the ground and transfers.
It doesn't guess your business: it says what you gave it. A good callbot follows your script, in your order, without improvising promises.
It doesn't exempt you from calling rules: who you may call, when, and with what consent remains your responsibility.
How much an AI callbot costs
Three billing models coexist. The monthly plan, common for small business reception: for example AirAgent lists €89 to €499 a month excluding VAT, then €0.21 to €0.30 a minute beyond included calls (prices taken on 9 October 2026).
Per-minute pricing by building block, at developer platforms: Vapi lists $0.05 a platform minute and Retell AI $0.055, plus voice, language model and telephony (prices taken on 8 October 2026).
All-inclusive per-minute pricing: at Nodical, €0.29 to €0.12 a minute depending on volume, calls to France included, on a public price list.
Also look at what the advertised price leaves out: the number of concurrent calls included, setup, and your team's time to keep the tool running.
Questions to ask before choosing
How many simultaneous calls are included, and what does each extra one cost?
Is telephony included, or do I need a separate carrier?
Does the callbot say my script word for word, or improvise its answers?
Does it detect voicemail, and can it warm-transfer to a salesperson?
Where do results go: is every call recorded, transcribed and filed?
Who sets up the campaign: you, your developers, or the vendor with you?
Questions we get asked
Can an AI callbot pass for a human?
The voice is natural, but it should introduce itself as an automated assistant. That's more honest, and people accept the conversation better when they know from the start.
Do I need to change my phone number?
No. For reception, conditional call forwarding is enough. For outbound calls, the callbot calls from dedicated numbers set up with you.
How long until a callbot is up and running?
At Nodical, the campaign is set up with you from your script and your contact list: there's no technical project to run before the first useful call.
Are callbot and voicebot the same thing?
Yes, in everyday use. Both describe software that converses by voice; “callbot” stresses the phone.
The first call, the one nobody likes making, is the one Nodical makes.
